Darrel Schmitz, PhD, PG, President of Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists provided us a presentation on Katrina: Geologic, Disaster and Personal Perspectives. Dr. Schmitz is the Professor of Geology and Head of Department of Geosciences at Mississippi State University. September 6, 2006 Dr. Syed Hasan, University of Missouri at Kansas City, Topic: Medical Geology. The meeting was held at Anthony's, 7220 F Street, Omaha, NE 402-331-7575. June 13, 2006 John Moylan presented a series of Case Studies on Kansas City District Dam projects in place of Peter Price. Thanks John for the last minute presentation. March 22, 2006 Jahns Lecturer Jerry Higgins, PhD, PG, Colorado School of Mines presented "Engineering Geology of Expansive Soil and Bedrock: A Case Study from Colorado". February 9, 2006 Dr. Rick Devlin, University of Kansas, Development of Point Velocity Probes For The Direct Measurement of Groundwater Velocities in Unconsolidated Porous Media. Meeting was held at Garozzo's in Overland Park, KS. September 14, 2005 How Far Have We Progressed Since the 1994 National Research Council Report on Groundwater Cleanup? We thank our panel of experts for their time and insight. June 16, 2005 Horizontal Shears in Shale: Causes and Effect on Design, Francke Walberg, P.E., URS and John Moylan, Consulting Geologist. May 17, 2005 Andrew F. McKown, P.E., Vice President, Haley & Aldrich, Inc. "Top Ten Myths Associated with Blasting for Highway slopes and Close In Construction." The meeting was held at the UMKC Campus. April 21, 2005 As the result of correspondence with KC/O members in Nebraska regarding how the Section might better serve the Nebraska members, Marvin Carlson, president of the Nebraska Geological Society, invited the KC/O Chairperson, John Moylan, to speak at the NGS' April 21 meeting. John discussed AEG and the KC/O Section and passed out a summary of who we are, how to contact us, website addresses, and section activities. Copies of our section web page, the AEG directory, AEG News and the journal were made available for attendees to peruse. In addition, John made a technical presentation "The Effects of Hydraulic Factors on PRB Design and Performance". Two KC/O members accompanied John to Omaha for the meeting; Julie WestHoff, Section secretary, and Bruce Wilkinson, program chairman. April 13, 2005 The Winner of the Student Competition, Melissa Marietta, presented her paper. She received a $250 prize for first place. The second place winner, Alston Noronha, received $100 for his paper. Secondly, the 2005 Jahns Lecturer, Dr. Richard Iverson of USGS in Vancouver WA, presented "Dynamics of Debris Flows and Rock Avalanches." January 25, 2005 Our speaker was Dr. Craig Denny of Terracon. Case Studies of Interesting Geotechnical Failures and held at UMKC. January 14, 2005 Joint ASCE, UMKC, AEG meeting.
